A third residential college in University Town will be opened in August 2012, catering to the demand for more residential places within campus.
Simply called ‘College 3’, it will also promote “active citizenship” and community involvement through the ‘Capstone Experience’, said Tan Eng Chye in the provost’s circular yesterday morning. The ‘Capstone Experience’ is an elective module offered by College 3 combining both academic rigour and community contribution.
While the first two residential colleges have core curriculums for their residents, their curriculums have been focusing on writing and global issues. The core modules offered in College 3 however, plan to focus on students’ participation within the community.
Associate Professor Adeline Seow, from the National University of Singapore Saw See Hock School of Public Health, has been appointed as the Master for the third residential college.
She saw her appointment as a privilege in contributing to “something that could radically influence, in a positive sense, the university experience of many students,” said Seow in a press release by the university.
However, there are concerns among students about the opening of the third residential college.
“The ‘Capstone Experience’ is a good initiative but it should be open to the rest of the campus as well,” Ang Yu Qian, 24, a fourth-year undergraduate and a resident of the Tembusu College in UTown said . “While I understand that being able to attend these modules and seminars contributes to the unique experience of staying in a UTown college, it is a shame that such an initiative is limited only to its residents.”
Apart from College 3, the provost also announced in the circular that the EduSports Complex, a multi-purpose building for sporting, educational and cultural activities in UTown, is expected to be ready by late 2012.
