RUTHE KEE HUI SIN
Visiting a tribe in Africa, immersing in their seldom-seen cultures, and reporting interesting finds to the rest of the world occupy Ruthe Kee’s daily thoughts. They would no more be if she one day fulfils her ultimate dream: writing for the National Geographic. The 23-year-old otherwise spends her less exciting time as a contributing writer for local fashion magazine, Alexis. There she lends her expert eye, visiting them upon fashion runway shows, unreleased... Read more

LEE HUI YING
For many, the measuring tape coiled round the waist signals a need for looser clothes or a stricter diet. This coil of insecurity however is anything but for Lee Hui Ying, 21, owing only in part to her 26-inch waistline. More importantly, she prides herself on abiding by the qualities of flexibility and objectivity, which she feels the measuring tape symbolises. The wiry, bespectacled third-year communications student at the National University of Singapore could not... Read more

GAN KANG PING ROY
Many undergrads enjoy the nightlife but few work in the industry. Certainly, even fewer treat their work there seriously. Juggling between school and being a part-time bartender twice a week at Play, Gan Kang Ping Roy, a third year major in communications and new media with a spunky hair bun, also sees his workplace as being an important avenue for him to network. “Our customers are usually part of the creative industry”, said Gan, 23, of an industry that... JESSICA LAI SHU FEN
Some people are idealists, recklessly pursuing their life’s dream at all costs. Others resign to fate, hesitant to dream for fear of failure. For undergraduate Jessica Lai Shu Fen, a well-struck balance is found in her first love of music. While the saying “music is my life” has become somewhat of a clichéd declaration of many musicians, music truly does permeate the life of 22-year-old Lai. As a budding singer-songwriter, she spent her time before entering university training with a professional vocal coach. Currently, Lai performs on an ad-hoc basis for events at Kent Ridge Hall, where... Read more

LEANNE LIM
By virtue of her love for David Beckham and the fact that she had a ‘shrine’ of football posters displayed all over her bedroom in her younger days, Manchester United fan Leanne Lim, 21, seems to be a typical fan-girl that loves the sports more for the hunks rather than the beautiful game. It does not help that she squeals excitedly about the youngest player on the team—goalie David De Gea “He’s Spanish and so cute!” English Premier League die-hard fans, don’t... Read more

ATHENA FOO ZHI HUI
“At times in my life the only place I have been happy is when I am on stage,” Bob Dylan used to say. This holds true for Athena Foo, 21, as well. Discovering her talents from an early age, Foo danced her way into the spotlight. At the tender age of eight when other children were aspiring to be lawyers and doctors, Foo set her sights on the stage. Beginning with the classical ballet, she picked up other dance forms like Chinese dance, hip-hop and contemporary dance along... Read more

An active girl with many interests, she not only played volleyball and handball for Sheares Hall but also held the position of Director of Information as an EXCO member last year. She dreams of setting up her own internet café, something that has been conceptualised since she was in secondary school. Why is this unusual for 21-year-old Teng? This is because... Read more

Darren Ong spent most of his growing up moments playing sports, so it is no wonder his greatest achievement in 23 years that took place this year also surrounds sports. His sudden interest in pool ignited when he was 14 years old and continued since. The National University of Singapore pool varsity team captain went against all odds and led his team to win the gold medal in Singapore university games in August, beating three other universities. Playing self-penned folk rock originals like Settle the Kettle and Cherry, Han charmed the audience at the NOISE Singapore showcase in March. NOISE is a collaboration of various up-and-coming local artistes. Undeterred by the lack of support and low payoffs, the local music scene has been making waves in... Read more

MELISSA FU XUNRU
Adventurous and curious are two words that easily describe Melissa Fu. Unlike a typical local undergraduate, she is one of a rare few who, at 23, can say that she has bathed in water contaminated with E. coli, endured through a storm while at a cycling tour in Paris and witnessed the first night of the London riots. Her passion for geography has seen her through two summer programmes – one in the Chinese University of Hong Kong International Summer School and... Read more
